Good vibes

You have packed your bags and stepped aboard a floating city carrying thousands of fellow travelers on the ocean. In your cabin the only sound is the gentle lapping of waves against the hull. Learn how your quiet, smooth journey is made possible through Trelleborg’s invisible engineering.

Passengers book cabins on cruise ships months in advance, choosing a vessel that promises restful nights and uninterrupted ocean views. What they rarely think about is the hidden technology that makes the voyage more comfortable, quieter and better connected.

Silence by design

“Every rotating machine on a cruise ship is a potential source of disturbance,” says Bart Vandedrinck, Global Sales Director, for Trelleborg’s marine antivibration solutions.

“Engines, gensets, chillers, pump assemblies and water treatment systems all generate low-frequency noise that, without isolation, would bleed into passenger spaces 24-7. By mounting this equipment on strategically selected antivibration solutions, cruise ship operators keep decks quiet and cabin interiors free of unwanted mechanical noise.”

Below decks, a separate engineering challenge plays out every minute of a voyage. As engines run and temperatures fluctuate, exhaust pipework expands, contracts and vibrates with each change in load. Left unmanaged, that movement causes misalignment, noise and potential compliance failures.

Staying aligned

Vandedrinck explains how Trelleborg's exhaust line systems handle this.

“Every exhaust run stays aligned, compliant and acoustically controlled, from engine to outlet through four coordinated components: expansion joints that absorb axial and lateral movement, fixed suspension that isolates vibration from the hull, flexible deck conduits that guard against water ingress, and sliding points that accommodate thermal expansion along the line.”

“Our engineering teams analyze every vibration source from propulsion systems to auxiliary machinery, designing tailored solutions that uphold acoustic comfort at sea,” he continues. “Consistent innovation is what sets a new standard for silence in the cruise industry.”

A modern cruise ship also needs to be digitally connected, allowing passengers to share their experiences in real time.

A network miles out at sea

Modern cruise ships do far more than provide a stable and comfortable journey. They also enable passengers to capture and share memories in real time, keeping friends and family connected through social media and live streams of their most memorable moments.

“Reliable WiFi, a consistent power supply and seamlessly connected entertainment systems are all essential to the onboard passenger experience,” says Ionut Chirica, Key Account Manager for Trelleborg’s antivibration solutions.

“Passengers may never notice the thousands of modular cable grommets and entry plates installed throughout a cruise liner,” Chirica continues, “but these components play a vital role in keeping them connected online and ensuring they enjoy uninterrupted entertainment throughout their voyage.”

“All components meet IMO and SOLAS standards, giving ship owners confidence in both performance and regulatory standing. The result is a vessel that stays connected, compliant and ready for whatever technology tomorrow's passengers expect,” concludes Chirica.

Arriving smoothly

As the cruise ship glides into port, the final chapter of a passenger's voyage depends on engineering they may never see. At cruise ports around the world, complete berthing and mooring solutions from Trelleborg, including marine fenders, bollards, and capstans, absorb the forces of a vessel docking and hold it securely in place.

Behind every dependable arrival lies a process of careful planning and informed decision-making. Trelleborg's SafePilot software and portable pilot units support this process, providing accurate positioning, real-time data and enhanced situational awareness. These tools help pilots navigate complex port approaches safely and efficiently, ensuring passengers arrive on schedule and without incident.

Relaxed and refreshed

When passengers safely disembark at the end of their voyage, rested and thoroughly relaxed, they will be unaware how Trelleborg’s solutions have helped make that possible.

“The most effective engineering is the kind nobody notices. Trelleborg's solutions enhance passengers’ experiences, ensuring peace, comfort and seaworthy sailing. We’re happy that no one sees how we keep the bad vibes out,” concludes Vandedrinck.
